How to clean and care for your MeLuna
One of the great things about using a menstrual cup is that you are in control of the cleanliness. You do not have to rely on someone else to clean and pack it hygienically, as you do with tampons.
The plastic (TPE) is used for medical devices and can be easily cleaned and disinfected. The plastic can be boiled or steam sterilized at 135 ° C.
Every woman can decide on the method of sterilization that's right for her. Here are some possibilities.
Please note that MeLuna should be sterilized for 2-3 minutes in plenty of boiling water before the first use.
Sterilizing in boiling water
On the stove: Bring water to boil in a small saucepan. Place MeLuna in the water for 2-3 minutes, making sure that there is enough water in the saucepan so that the MeLuna floats.
PLEASE NOTICE: MeLuna should never be boiled dry or touch the bottom of the pot, as plastic will melt! Don't leave the pot unattended!

In the microwave: MeLuna can also be disinfected in a microwave. MeLuna's material, TPE, is non-polar and will not be heated by the microwave, but rather by the hot water. Put MeLuna in a microwavable container and bring to a boil in the microwave. Caution: Do not scald your fingers when you remove MeLuna!

Hot salt water: Sterilize MeLuna in boiling water with a little salt. This helps to prevent discoloration and increases the cleaning effect.
Vinegar water: A little vinegar in the boiling water can help to prevent scale deposits and has a natural disinfecting and deodorizing effect. Use vinegar water hot or cold, with a 3% concentration of vinegar (see EU regulation global migration).
Disinfection by means of special disinfectants
Another method of sterilization is commercially-available disinfectants, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or chlorine water. If you choose one of these methods, please rinse MeLuna thoroughly before reinsertion to prevent irritation of the vaginal mucosa by chemical residues.

Recommendations for cleaning during use
To clean MeLuna during usage, you can rinse it under running water, or wipe it with toilet paper or paper towels. If you want a more intensive cleaning, vaginal wash (pH 3.5) can also be used. After draining and cleaning, MeLuna can be placed inside again. Sterilization is also required after your menstruation ends and before the first time you use MeLuna when your next period starts.
Please be sure to only reach for your MeLuna with clean hands.
How do I clean my MeLuna when I'm out?
There are several options. Many women urinate on their cup and put it back in place. (Normally, urine is sterile.) Or, wipe your MeLuna with toilet paper or paper towels before reinserting. If you have water at your disposal, you can also rinse MeLuna before replacing. Carrying a cleaning cloth or a water bottle can be very helpful in public toilets, because there is not always a sink within reach.

Smell or discolorations of your MeLuna
Slight discoloration will often occur over a long period of use, and this is the case with all menstrual cups from all manufacturers. However, with regular and thorough cleaning these discolorations are slight.
Unpleasant odors can be prevented. MeLuna should be removed every 8 to 12 hours. Some women have reported temporary changes of smell, which are likely due to various proteins in the blood. A menstrual cup may suddenly assume a different smell, although it has been cleaned as usual.
